I see this all the time on LinkedIn.
A big company selling AI SDRs.
Preaching that it's the new way to do outbound.
Replace your sales team with software, they say.
Then I look at their careers page.
Hiring new SDRs.
Plural.
So I figured I'd just write about it.
Because the gap between what these companies sell and what they actually do internally tells you everything you need to know.
- Should AI be in your outbound process? Yes.
Should AI be sending the emails, the DMs, and making the calls?
No.
The companies selling you "AI SDRs" already know this. That's why they have a human sales team booking demos for their AI SDR product.
The pitch and the practice don't match. That's the warning sign.
- Most reps spend 20% of their day actually selling.
The other 80% is admin.
CRM fills. Disposition notes. List building. Lead research. Inbound routing. Lead scoring. Contact sourcing. Cadence management. Call feedback.
If you double a rep's selling time, you don't need to hire another £80k SDR.
You just have to give the one you already have their week back.
- This is where AI actually wins.
Not replacing the rep.
Removing the work that was stopping them from being a rep.
Building lists at 3am while they sleep.
Routing inbound leads in under 60 seconds.
Logging dispositions automatically off the call recording.
Scoring and prioritising the queue before they log in on Monday.
Surfacing the three accounts that triggered a buying signal yesterday and need a call this morning.
That's the job. That's what AI should be doing.
- The reason the "AI SDR" pitch sticks is because it sounds cheaper.
Replace a £70k salary with a £20k subscription. Of course leadership likes that on a spreadsheet.
In practice, the buyer never wanted to have a conversation with software.
They wanted a human who knew their business well enough to be worth 15 minutes of their week.
You can automate everything around that conversation.
The conversation itself is still the point.
- The companies winning right now are picking the boring answer.
Keep the reps.
Automate the admin around them.
Watch the same headcount produce 2-3x the output inside a quarter.
No layoffs. No new hires. Just the team you already have, doing the job you actually hired them for.
I share this because the AI SDR pitch is loud right now, and it's pointing teams at the wrong problem.
The problem isn't that you have humans in your sales team.
It's that your humans are doing work a machine should be doing.
