Over the last six months I've watched a lot of teams hit the same wall.
Their signal-led outbound was working.
Reply rates were strong. Meetings were booking. Pipeline was healthy.
Then it stopped.
So they did what every team does when outbound goes quiet.
They rewrote the copy.
New hooks. New CTAs. New framing.
And nothing changed.
So I figured I'd just write about it.
Because in almost every case I've seen, the copy isn't the problem.
The signal layer is.
Here's how to diagnose it.
- Check how your team is pulling signals.
Ask the team how the last list got built.
If the answer is "we pulled everyone with a job change this quarter", that's the problem.
That's a static snapshot of a single moment in time.
By the time you've enriched it, sequenced it, and started calling, the signal is three weeks cold.
Real signal use is continuous. The TAM is being watched in real time, and accounts get surfaced the day the signal fires, not three weeks later.
- Check if you're acting on one signal or several.
The accounts worth your time aren't the ones with a signal.
They're the ones where several things are happening at once.
If your team works funding rounds, or job changes, or new tech installs, but never spots the account that just raised AND hired a VP of Sales AND posted three SDR roles, you're acting on single signals.
A single signal is noise.
Stacked signals are a buying window.
Most teams don't have the layer that tells them which is which.
- Here's what we use to fix it.
BirdDog sits on top of the CRM.
It watches the whole TAM continuously, not in pulled-list snapshots.
It scores every account by how many signals are firing in that account right now.
You write the signals in plain language.
"Replacing a legacy CRM."
"Hired a RevOps leader in the last 60 days."
"VP of Sales started in the last 90 days."
The accounts are already split by territory in the CRM.
The rep logs in, opens their patch, and sees a live ranked list of what's moving right now.
No ops bottleneck. No stale lists. No single-signal noise.
I share this because almost every team I've audited recently has been treating a targeting problem as a copy problem.
The reply rates are telling them something. It's just not what they think.
If you want a look at how to set up a live signal layer in BirdDog and sync it into your reps' CRM patches, reply and I'll send the setup over.
