I just saw my AI sales bot and AI marketing bot have a fight about lead quality.

By ·

I'm joking.

Mostly.

But the picture in my head was funny.

Two AI agents in a Slack channel.

"These leads are unqualified."

"They're exactly what you asked for."

"You said C-level."

"You said senior decision-makers."

The same fight humans have been having for 20 years.

Just faster, and with less passive aggression.

So I figured I'd just write about it.

  1. AI is not the cause. And it's not the fix.

It's the amplifier.

If your teams agree on what a qualified lead is, AI makes the system faster.

If they don't, AI just makes the disagreement louder.

The argument used to happen in a quarterly QBR.

Now it happens 14 times before lunch.

  1. The cause is structural.

Marketing has one account list.

Sales has a different one.

Marketing scores leads on behaviour.

Sales scores them on gut feel.

Neither team has the same definition of "qualified".

You can wire Claude into every step of that and it will still break.

The problem was never execution speed. It was alignment between silo'd teams.

  1. The teams winning in 2026 share four things.

One list.

One signal stack.

One definition of qualified.

One scorecard.

Not a new tool. Not a new agency. Just the discipline to make both teams agree on the same picture of reality.

  1. The conversation nobody wants to have is the one that fixes it.

Sit both leaders in a room.

Write the definition of "qualified" on a whiteboard.

Title. Company size. Behaviour. Signal. Stage.

The definition might be ugly. It might take three meetings.

Until you've done it, every handoff is a fight waiting to happen.

  1. Measure both teams on the same outcome.

Marketing on MQL volume alone hands sales a pile of bad leads.

Sales on closed-won alone rejects every lead that isn't perfect.

Measure both on pipeline contribution and closed-won influence.

The metric forces the alignment. The alignment kills the fight.

I share this because the AI conversation has become a distraction.

AI is what you install after you've fixed alignment, not before.

A good system runs faster with AI on top.
